Highschool of the Dead

February 5, 2010

Anime News Network reported that the “Highschool of the Dead” manga written by Daisuke Satou and drawn by Shoji Sato will not only continue after a long hiatus, but will also receive an anime adaptation.

Although horror is not my genre, liked how the plot focused not only on action and horror, but showcased the practical and social ramifications of such a world altering event, including how it affects the protagonists.

While most characters are based on tried and true generic types, the manga does delve into their psyche in interesting ways, fleshing them out and for some actually gives them more daring darker personal traits.

The fact these darker traits are shown to not especially be triggered by the onslaught of the zombies and downfall of society, but might be innate to the characters gives them additional depth and realism.

Especially Saeko is an interesting character in that particular aspect.

While she starts off as the archetype perfect and skilled beauty who’s lethal with the blade, much like Shizuku in “Kämpfer” or Tomoe in “Queen’s Blade”, it’s hinted she may have been a sadist all along which brings her to feel inferior to the others.

The typical zombie story elements are all present, but “Highschool of the Dead” spends enough time away from the action and obligatory ecchi harem subplot of the girls smitten on the male lead to illustrate how daily life becomes a struggle and what practical issues the characters face.

Like Shoji Sato’s art, he has a very signature style that leaves no doubt one of the main elements in “Highschool of the Dead” are its shapely, busty maidens. In fact the manga already spawned a few figure releases, notably a daring figure of Saeko based on the famous illustration of the long haired katana wielding beauty in nothing but a frilly apron.

Am glad the manga will carry on and also am looking forward to the anime adaptation. If well executed, the anime could provide a solid horror series.

    That’s great news!
    This is one of my favorites manga even though the long hiatus because it’s a simple one but with lots of action and different perspectives. Besides their women are hot, specially my favorite, the ojou-sama Saya (the one of the last picture^^).
    I hope the anime version doesn’t screw the original feelings in the manga.
    Greetings.

    Sweet. I’ve been waiting for it to continue.

    My only fear is that with all the beautiful girls in this series, they all have a good chance of being bitten resulting in… (>_<) No, I don't want to think about it….they'll find some safe uninhabited fruitful island to wait it all out. Damn you Takashi and Kouta…all alone with gorgeous women on an island drinking your coconut milk from umbrella straws…

    Like Saya a lot too, also appreciate at least she’s not included in the Takashi harem plot, which is really more a love triangle actually… but she gets her own potential love interest in Kouta.
    Hope the anime indeed retains the atmosphere of the manga.

    Cool, glad was somehow able to help. ^^
    @Horus
    If the manga carries on with the intent of fleshing the story out and have a sufficiently long run, the chances of one or more of the characters dying for plot shock and realism is alas high.
    That island idea is not bad actually…

    I have read the manga and it’s great! I’m fan of zombie-horror and this is good news for me. Yeah busty maidens, at my first impression I thought about another “Ikkitousen” in horror manga. The plot itself not only centered in zombie creature but social problem after outbreak. Wait for this ^^

    True, while the manga is rife with sexy girls often experiencing clothing malfunction or striking sensual poses, it’s mostly just window dressing to appeal to a broader audience as the plot behind it is solid.

    The horror, the girls, and the art style all appeal to me. I really look forward to seeing this anime

    Zombies!! It’s great for it to have an anime, but I’ll both anticipate and dread it at the same time >.< I hate zombies but I like the story so it's torture for me :D Hrm… now i wonder how gory the anime will be -_-;
