Drossel blue led photo fun

Back when Hobby Search was the first online store to reopen reservation for the upcoming Azusa Nakano Nendoroid, not only pre-ordered Azusa but also purchased the Drossel Figma.

One of my aims in getting Drossel in Figma form was to get a convenient photo subject since the Figma, Nendoroid and Dollfie photo shenanigans seen online from other otaku often contain excellent images.

Immediately saw a nice opportunity for some photo fun by posing Drossel with a Trunna lamp.

A decorative lamp from Ikea, the Trunna sports blue leds set on acrylic discs suspended on a cylindrical frame.

So one evening, set up my tripod and turned off all the other lights to have Drossel illuminated only by the blue light cast by the leds.

Unknown what such an alien looking structure might be, Drossel goes on a journey of discovery!

Any reports of yours truly singing “I’m blue da ba dee” while making these photos are simply preposterous and I assure you, absolutely false.

While am no Disney fan, did like “Fireball” and thought Drossel looked cute and convincing enough in Figma form, where else the highly visible joints typical to Figma (and other articulated figures) can quickly be unflattering on normal characters that get the Figma treatment.

Shooting in M manual mode quickly noticed the advised optimal exposure time by the Canon 450D resulted in over-exposed, washed out shots so for most photos I decreased the exposure time.

Due to this, some of the images may look a bit dark, am temped to check out the new Canon 550D which is said to perform better in low light conditions.

Used both the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM lens as well as the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens.

Set ISO 200 for all shots and didn’t select any special Picture Styles, tried various f-stops though to see which gave the most interesting result.

Even though it was sometimes tricky to find a stable position for the tripod during the overhead shots as the above image, the 100mm macro produced the sharpest results while the 15-85mm seemed to return more blurry shots now and then.

Possibly due to the dark or the fact I did not turn off its IS Image Stabilization function while on the tripod.

Made some random shots with the 15-85mm lens the next day to ensure there was nothing wrong with it and it performed much better then.

Trying to escape by way of her flying gear jets, Drossel alas is faced with the dilemma the wings extend past the edges!

大丈夫でございますか、お嬢さま?

Opted to include some cropped versions of the best shots to focus more on Drossel, like above image or the very first image in this post.

    Nice pictures ^^

    But you know: If I would change from a 450 to a 550, I would go a class further. 50D maybe.

    Very interesting setup indeed. I was never a fan of figma myself, did get a couple just to see how they turn out but they never worked out for me. Nice try for the photo space, am always looking out for more props for my appetite for DD Photography myself.

    @Leonia
    Thanks. ^^
    What a coincidence, Drossel is my first and only Figma as well.
    @GREW
    While higher grade, the 50D is an older model though, no? As it is I’m not really looking for a replacement, not budgeted either.
    @Wolfheinrich
    Well the Drossel Figma suits me since the joints aren’t as obtrusive on her. Though don’t think I’ll really collect many more Figma besides her. Don’t know if the Trunna will work with Dollfies, might be a bit too small for that.

    She looks like trapped in a cage or something. The rendering is special and kinda futuristic. I also like the color, this techo-purple like in a dancing club-house … it suits Drossel perfectly.
    I’ll let photographers comment about the quality, myself i’ll just say it looks damn cool :D

    @Katsura-chan
    They do have somewhat of that techno/dance temple vibe. ^^
    @anonymous_object
    Thanks. ^^
    Will see if I can experiment more with colored lighting like that.

    Good photo test. ;)
    Blue lightning give a perfectly futuristic atmosphere for Drossel.
