High School DxD

January 22, 2012

Based on the light novel series “ハイスクールDxD”written by Ishibumi Ichiei with illustrations created by Miyama Zero, had hoped that “High School DxD” would be an entertaining anime adaptation full of action and phantasy elements with its premise of demons battling fallen angels.

Initial reservations regarding the advertised harem element -painfully obvious from the anime homepage url ‘haremking’- proved true, the first episodes showing the series to be a rather bland ecchi comedy apparently lost looking for a true identity in silly explicit scenery.

Although there are series of that genre which excel thanks to clever comedy and suggestive ecchi elements, “High School DxD” is not such a show. The nudity and suggestive shots are all shown in an uninspired fashion, the male lead is far too much of a silly caricature, all making the serious blood splattering action feel totally out of place.

Hikasa Youko who voiced Mio in “K-ON!” and Shino in “Seitokai Yakuindomo” voices shapely redhead Rias. Taketatsu Ayana voices Koneko, she also voiced Azusa in “K-ON!” and Fuu in “Tamayura ~hitotose~” and Shizuko Itou voices Akeno, she previously did roles like Haruka in “Amagami SS”.

Though am unsure their voice work is enough to be a saving grace for this series which I alas cannot recommend.

    I’ll admit, not the greatest anime out there. But not so bad I haven’t watched the eps out so far. Its something I could have playing in the background without much trouble. Ep 3 he does start to see what he’s in for and gets a bit serious. We shall see though.

    True, but if i compare to how I like some other currently airing series, this one falls short and doesn’t make the cut for me alas. ^^;;

    True. I’m not watching many at the moment. Once I upgrade my system and go back to a multiple monitor setup though I’ll probably having something running on one of the other screens constantly.

    So far i like this show but yeah the male hero is … lame and not really interesting.
    Honestly i don’t know why i continue to watch.
    I love the character design yes and stuff with demons and angels always attracted me so i guess it is sufficient for me at this point.
    Will probably drop if the hero piss me off to much :)

    I gave up on it and opted to watch “Inu x Boku SS” instead. The angles vs demon element is nice but I fear it’s just going to get drowned out midst the violence and ecchi elements.

    Couldn’t disagree more.

    Cool character design, fun demons, good fights interesting power use … I like it. Better story than most of the lame harem shows of the last few years (e.g., Infinite Stratos). It deviates a bit from the stereotypical harem setup in its mentor/teacher vibe and the hero being a low-ranking demon trying to improve rather than the object of lust from all female cast members.

    Really? Well I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying that show, as having fun watching an anime is what matters most. Personally alas I don’t like this series much at all.
    Guess there’s no accounting for taste?! ^^
