Windows 7

Last Thursday Microsoft officially released its Windows 7 operating system. Having used the Windows 7 Release Client and being satisfied with it, had pre-ordered a retail package of Windows 7 Home Premium from Amazon UK, which was promptly delivered at my doorstep on October 22nd.

Went for Amazon UK’s offer on the Home Premium retail box since their price was unbeatable, under half what a Home Premium OEM package costs at local online stores here.

The retail pack gives you the option to install on other hardware later on, while the OEM version is linked to the first hardware configuration you install it on. (There are ways around that, but if you can get the retail pack for less than the OEM, it’s the natural choice.)

Decided on Home Premium instead of Professional and Ultimate since the increased price tag isn’t worth the few extra added options since I am likely to never use them. While I know Windows is not without flaws or fault, professionally need to be familiar with it and prefer to be legally correct by having a licensed version.

Now to do a clean install sometime…

FACTS 2009 loot

Attended the FACTS convention this past weekend. A yearly rendezvous not to miss, FACTS is an anime, sci-fi and fantasy themed convention and pretty much the largest, if not only venue of its kind here.

FACTS is the best opportunity to do some anime goods and figure shopping among the plethora of vendor booths present, as well as an excellent chance meet up with otaku friends. Alas the turnout of anime goods was rather meager this year, only three booths offered anime figures and one booth surprisingly had doujinshi.

Bought these two great figures there, Teana Lanster from “Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS” and Nankyoku Sakura from “Penguin Musume Heart”, both by Alter. (Horo and Yoko look on approvingly.)

Although they weren’t especially high on my wish list, decided to splurge. Had originally seen the great photos by Meronpan of Teana and Sakura, so knew they were worth it.

With these two joining my collection, together with other recent acquisitions Saber and Yoko, I have acutely run out of room to display or even store my seventeen figures. A trip to Ikea for a Detolf display cabinet seems to be the obvious next step.

This week the bounty is plentiful! After receiving Saber Lily yesterday another parcel awaited me today.

Had pre-ordered Alter’s Yoko Littner from “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann” at Archonia, whom only received it in stock this week, even though the figure has been out for a while now. But she was certainly worth waiting for!

Next to Good Smile Company’s Saber Lily, this bounty hunter version of Yoko by Alter was much anticipated and marks a whole new level of excellence in figure releases. From the amazing sculpt to the spotless finish and terrific paint job, she’s gorgeous.

Also acquired a copy of the “Code Geass Heroine’s Tribute” artbook filled with sublime illustrations. Had hoped Archonia would offer in their catalog, so grabbed it when they added it to their stock.

You might spot another “Code Geass” item. Having finally succumbed to the irresistible desire, acquired what is surely the ultimate otaku item. Some might recognize it… will reveal more about it another day!

Spotted these images of truly impressive Itasha done in “Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS” style on otaku extraordinaire Danny Choo’s blog.

Itasha (痛車, い たしゃ) which literally means ‘painful car’ are cars adorned with various decals of anime or eroge characters, from several simple stickers to complete customized decals covering the entire hood, side or roof.

While some Itasha that I have seen images of in the past have been decent to excellent conversions, these two “Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS” styled racing cars of which you see the Fate themed one above are truly astounding!

These particular Itasha are not just limited to large decals, but feature complete customized paint jobs in colors fitting Fate and Nanoha respectively, full car body decals of the characters, even the rims were colored to match the rest of the car.

Japanese input with Azerty in Windows 7

Where in Windows XP you have to install the Eastern Asian Languages option to be able to display Japanese characters onscreen and enable Microsoft IME (sometimes a separate install) to be able to type Japanese characters, this has become easier and more user friendly in Windows 7 (like in Windows Vista).

Alas one drawback remains when using Japanese input in Windows 7, the keyboard layout used by Microsoft for Japanese input/IME is by default set to the US International Qwerty keyboard layout.

While this is no doubt not an issue for the majority of people, who use this keyboard layout, it’s rather inconveniencing for those among us with different keyboard layouts.

Luckily, this can easily be remedied. You can change the default keyboard layout used by Japanese input/IME to another one by altering an entry in the Windows 7 registry.
