Candy☆Boy DVD Vol 1 review

June 21, 2009

Even though it arrived some time ago, hadn’t shared my thoughts yet on the “Candy☆Boy” volume one DVD. With the second DVD volume due out the coming week, now might be the ideal time to do so.

So, is it worth getting? Absolutely! Sure the investment is higher than local releases and as such it may appeal only to fans of the series, but as soon as I popped in the DVD and started watching any doubts washed away.

The video quality is absolutely stunning, certainly when compared to the Nico Nico Douga broadcast, but even high quality DVD rips can not match the crisp and clear video of this original DVD.

Being able to enjoy these “Candy☆Boy” episodes in stunning video and audio quality makes getting this original Japanese release more than worth it!

Featuring episodes 1 through 4 of the “Candy☆Boy” series, this ‘volume one’ DVD retails at the regular Japanese anime DVD price range which is alas rather steep by our standards, especially if you consider the contents are limited to just the four fifteen minute long episodes and do not include any significant extras.

You do get a bonus パジャマパーテイー (pajama party) audio CD, which is much like other drama CD’s based on popular series and provides fun entertainment. Besides that, the DVD is rather bare.

For a series like “Candy☆Boy” that was broadcast online, most revenue the creators make is through DVD and other merchandise sales.
Since a future European or American release with subtitles seems doubtful and the language used in the series is mostly comprehensible day to day conversations, I opted to get this fantastic series in its original Japanese release since I didn’t want to miss out on owning it on DVD and supporting the creators that way.

As it contains episodes 1 through 4 of the series, the first volume also encompasses a full story arc, building up to and including the Sakurai girls’ visit to their home for Christmas which makes it a nice whole story for the viewer, not necessarily requiring you to have seen episode 0.

Won’t write out the content of the episodes here as I reckon most of you may already have seen them and if not, you can view them on the Nico Nico Douga “Candy☆Boy” channel. If you watch them there and enjoy this great series, definitely grab the DVD, you won’t regret it!

Both “Candy☆Boy” DVD Volume 1 and Volume 2 are available at Amazon Japan, the second volume comes in two flavors, a ‘Lovely’ version and a ‘Friendly’ version.

Can’t wait for the second volume to be out and arrive!

I’ve watched this series from one source or another (need sub-titles as my Japanese, while not zero, still sux) and enjoyed it a lot. I have a question though. what is the difference between the ‘Lovely’ and ‘Friendly’ versions. Even if I don’t understand it well, I might pick-up the DVDs just to support the makers.

    @CHMakoto
As far as the difference between the ‘Lovely’ and ‘Friendly’ versions goes, each will come with a different bonus DJ CD. (So if you want both DJ CD’s you’d need to get both versions. Think I’ll see if there’s another source for that extra CD though…)
They also come with a limited run of application tickets which seems to be different for both version. Application ticket to what exactly… no idea, haven’t been able to figure that out yet.
The purchase was worth it to me since this level of Japanese, I can master enough to follow what’s going on. With some training and/or classes, I’m sure you can do it too. ^^
Then again, you may enjoy getting the figures more, depends on what you fancy.

Umuu… you’re tempting me to get this… but I’m very short on funds now. It really is too bad that it’s barebones. I’m sure they could’ve had some kind of voice actresses interviews or something.

I’ve found this anime, so cute and my daughter really likes it,my wife as always had a problem with it, she gets carzy at stuff like this,i’ve tried to explain it over and over that animes are done with life situtation, so this is how you must watch these types of animes, but this had that loving not watered down feel to it , it did it’s job well—-the only thing i want to point out is they could have the twins, kiss at the moments when they worked out there problems to keep thier bond strong ‘ they did do a goog job.
