C77 or Kantoku’s ‘Ashiato’?

December 29, 2009

Comiket 77 is upon us with legions of raving otaku queuing in endless lines, especially those for famous artists and illustrators.

Yahoo! Japan Auctions will no doubt soon explode with often pricy auctions for items sold at this Comiket edition.

Several art connoisseurs posted excellent C77 primers and guides which are definitely worth checking out, such as those found at Hunting the Elusive, Claritism and Tengai Kodoku.

Browsing through these guides, was most interested in the releases by Kantoku (from 5年目の放課後), Tony Taka (from T2 Artworks, homepage nsfw) and Mahiru Izimi (泉まひる, homepage nsfw).

Actually not convinced about Mahiru Izumi’s release, it doesn’t look as appealing this time as his C76 Mio themed “K-ON!” book.

Goto-P and Tomose Shunsaku’s releases actually do look quite interesting. Also read that Ishikei (from Nise MIDI Doronkai) is releasing a collector book featuring illustrations from his previous doujinshi.

However, am not sure that I’ll be buying any items from C77.

Weighing the projected costs of getting several of these doujin books, including shipping, proxy service fees, the fact Kantoku and Tony Taka’s releases seem to be regular doujinshi and not collector books like those released at C76, think I’ll save these funds.

Funds that have actually already been invested in purchasing Kantoku’s “あしあと~カントクアートワークス~ “ book which I ordered from Amazon Japan and just got confirmation today it has been shipped out to me.

Am certain that favoring Kantoku’s “あしあと~カントクアートワークス~ “ is a good choice, certainly considering how I prefer such collector books and how terrific this one promises to be, as is clearly shown in Nattoli’s review of this artbook.

Although, who can say if I’ll really be able to resist the temptation of C77 goods?

Am sure Comiket would be quite the experience to take in while visiting Japan. While I hope to go someday soon, am not convinced I’ll try and visit during Comiket though.
