K-ON!! side characters

April 22, 2010

Not long before “K-ON!!” started to air, the otakusphere was alive with the rumor of a new character that would join the cast. A pink haired girl with a ponytail named Miura Akane, she turned out to be a fan created character.

Now we see Pixiv and other otaku dens come alive again, this time focusing on characters that have appeared in the background several episodes in a row.

Cute artwork by ringo@林檎 (Pixiv) that shows the two more striking background characters.

Most renowned so far is the girl seen on the left, Tachibana Himeko (立花姫子), also known as the ‘センセイさよなら’ (sensei sayonara) girl or ‘結いのとなりの席の子’ which means ‘the girl sitting next to Yui’.

With a distinct hairstyle, she wears those irresistibly cute loose socks like Misaki from “To Aru Kagaku No Railgun”.

Lovely illustration by Ivy (Pixiv) of Himeko, who got her nickname simply because she actually sits next to Yui in class.

Her most noticeable appearance is at the start of episode two when she’s attentively following the scene unfold where the girls try to wake Yui, soon after she also bids their teacher Sawako goodbye.

Though she was also visible standing behind Mio when the students sang the school anthem during the entrance ceremony together with the girl seen below.

Artwork created by かにかま (Pixiv) who also has an adorable illustration of Azusa.

This cute dark haired girl with glasses, named Takahashi Fuuko (高橋風子) is also featured in a few illustrations on Pixiv.

This particular illustration by 九韻寺51 (Pixiv) shows some of the other girls that have appeared so far.

Will these girls continue to appear in “K-ON!!” and evolve from mere background characters into full fledged side characters?
Or has Kyoto Animation just taken extra care in rendering the light music club girls’ classmates with specific designs and consistency throughout the series, giving them faces instead of just remaining blank templates?
We shall see!

In the meantime, you can be sure to catch more illustrations and sketches of these “K-ON!!” side characters on Pixiv as the episodes go by.

I like the megane girl as well. Haven’t really noticed them much though, but I’m behind already on K-On!!
I hope we see more of them, at least more than we see the other megane girls. I don’t like the sensei or the girl from student council.

I thought Himeko was really cute when I first saw her in one of the eps ^.^

Really? I always liked Sawako and Nodoka. ^^
Isn’t she? I’m really curious to see if they’ll get more screentime or if KyoAni is simply using consistent design for the classmates (which would be terrific).

Haha a club on MAL was even created for her , ”the girl who sits next to Yui club ” XD

anyway im curious to see if they will have more screen time in the series.

The “sensei sayonara” girl reminds me of that girl from Kimi ni Todoke o.o

More screentime for her would be nice.

I think I’ll open myself to total Fuuko addiction, she’s just so adorable (for being a cute meganekko) albeit having no lines at all despite being in Nodoka’s group in ep04. Chances KyoAni will notice how fans fancy on these underrated characters thus giving them more screentime in later episodes or third season (if there’ll be any) just like they did with Jun (Azunyan’s friend).
