You might be surprised to see a post about a science fiction movie instead of the usual anime, manga, or photography topics. Had simply never gotten round to writing about sci-fi, a genre I do like, both in anime as in live action.

Wanted to put in a short word about “Predators” which builds directly onto the original “Predator” film from 1987 which I like for being an excellent, no-nonsense action sci-fi movie.

After a weak sequel and the appalling “Alien vs Predator” movies, this new movie “Predators” successfully captures the same atmosphere of the original. In fact, it uses all the elements of the first one to recreate a similar experience, right down to using music from the original.

Only the bare necessities were altered, only a bit was added and revealed about the predator race itself. Critics will justifiably fault the movie because of that, it doesn’t really bring anything new or original, doesn’t make any daring choices or try something novel. It simply takes what worked from the first movie and created a new one with that.

Which is exactly why I like “Predators”, had hoped to see more of the same as in the first movie and it delivers exactly that. It had the same atmosphere, that sense of desperation, of being up against something unknown and overpowering, the inhumanity of both the aliens and the humans was also brought forth.

An excellent science fiction movie which I really like for its raw entertainment value.

    “After a weak sequel”
    WHAT ?!

    “successfully captures the same atmosphere of the original.”
    Havent seen it happen once, capturing the raw fun of the 80’s action movies. Absolutely im-fucking-possible. There will never be another Commando or Robocop. Or Predator.

    Personally feel it managed to do that pretty well. Adrian Brody did an excellent job at playing a hard boiled no-nonsense action buff like Schwarzenegger, including a few one-liners.
    It didn’t achieve to recreate the exact same feeling when you watched the original “Predator” for the first time and theres this brooding, anxious mystery around what the alien exactly is, but that’s normal since the first movie gives those big surprises away.
    “Predator 2” really never lived up to the first one, it was alright, especially the beginning but then it just collapses onto itself.

    I caught Aliens vs. Predators on TV once. It was horrendous. From the review, it sounds like this one’s much better and sticks to the elements that first made us fall in love with Predators.

    Hadn’t seen it back in the cinema but had bought the “Aliens vs Predator” thinking it couldn’t be all that bad. Alas, it could and it was! ^^;;
    This one luckily is much better, in its genre though.
