New K-ON!! Image Song Cover Art by Nanao

August 8, 2010

When “K-ON!” first aired last year, the series spawned Character Image Song CD’s for its most popular characters which featured cover art with a specific recognizable style.

Back then wrote about the illustrations created by artist Nanao (ななお, Pixiv) of the けいおん girls in that same style as the Character Image Song cover art.

With the anime sequel “K-ON!!” and its upcoming new Character Image Song CD’s, Nanao has created new illustrations in that same style.

Wanted to showcase these great illustrations here, starting of course with Azusa, who remains my favorite “K-ON!!” character.

Had to include this image of Nodoka. Absolutely adore her character, wish we’d see more of her. Notice how her glasses were changed to an oval shape with a slimmer frame which makes the lovely class president even cuter!

Another element which makes it interesting to see an artist reprise illustrations of the same characters after some time is that it shows how that artist has progressed, do like the evolution in Nanao’s work here.

An excellent image of Yui, Nanao uses sharper facial traits and lines which create a different look for the けいおん girls compared to the series usual style, a look that suits them well.

While the characters are rendered in roughly the same style, there is clear improvement in facial expression, coloring, shading and do prefer the artist’s current style that shows an increase in finer details in the various images.

Couldn’t omit the light music club’s former member and current advisor, Sawako… hot for teacher anyone?

Where the earlier “K-ON!” Character Image Song themed illustrations featured jewelry accessories for all the girls, these new images have the girls sport small iPod Shuffle like mp3 players in strawberry shape with each having different colored in ear headphones and cords.

Of course had to show Mio’s image too! Although would like to show you Ritsu, Tsumugi and Ui’s as well, you can check those out on the artist’s Pixiv profile. ( Do be aware some of the artworks there are nsfw!)

The images also feature the music instrument logos for the light music club girls, and the artist has included such logos for Sawako, Nodoka and Ui as well.

Next to these Character Image Song themed illustrations, Nanao also created several other “K-ON!!” images such as the above one that shows the girls in their attire from the first ED animation.

You can also check out other work by this artist, including illustrations from “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann” and “Toradora!”.

Yeah, wonder what the new character songs for this “K-ON!!” season will be like. ^^
The strawberry mp3 players are a nice touch. Who knows maybe Kyoto Animation will release some with the “K-ON!!” merchandising. We’ve seen Evangelion mobile phones and all…
Have thought about taking the 6 character song cover arts by Nanao and puzzle them together onto one canvas as wallpaper use.

The artworks are very beautiful. I love this artist. I really like the first one with Azusa. I also prefer this finer style. It’s especially apparent with Yui; her gaping mouth is very cute.

Nanao’s style has improved, much crisper lines and sharper defined facial features which surprisingly suits the “K-ON!!” characters well.
