Queen’s Blade Utsukushiki Toushi-tachi OVA 1

August 14, 2010

With their vast armies amassed at the gates of Count Vance’s castle, several lords revolt against what they believe is the Count unjustly usurping the throne through his daughter Clodette, when in fact another had won the Queen’s Blade tournament.

While Elina makes short work of the attacking army, she soon faces off against the fearsome Echidna, hired by the revolting lords. Although Elina seems to gain the upper hand battling the wild elf, Echidna’s experience ultimately leads her to victory.

Chaining Elina up on a pillory, Echidna teases the battered girl for days, trying to crush the blond girl’s hopes that her sister Elina will rescue her. Remembering her youth, Elina thinks back how after her mother had passed away, Reina became her pillar of strength and the little girl soon looked up to her older sister with near idolatry.

As both girls grew into their teens, Reina distanced herself from Elina, putting an end to childish behaviors like bathing and sleeping together, much to the younger girl’s shock. Elina never overcame the scarring experience of seeing the older sister she idolized take her distance.

Reasoning with Elina while also teasing her, Echidna wonders about the childish beliefs she holds, trying to convince Elina that Reina won’t come and save her.

Further sinking into despair as the days pass while she’s strung up on the pillory, Elina stares death in the eye when the revolting lords prepare to brutally execute her. Just as dozens of arrows are about to mark her demise, thunderous explosions resound and the revolting lords’ armies are obliterated by Reina, who charges in to save her sister.

Saved in the nick of time, Elina cries tears of joy and clings to her sister. After spending time with her sister, Elina soon pleads Reina for a duel, stating that if she should win, Reina is to always stay by her side. Of course, Elina is no match for her sister and loses, though the girls have a heartfelt embrace before parting ways.

Thoughts on this episode~

This first episode of this new six part OVA picks up where the finale of “Queen’s Blade ~Gyokuza Wo Tsugumono~” left off, while Reina won the tournament, she relinquished the throne to her older sister Clodette to continue on her own journey.

With its fair share of nudity -which is comprised of showing the characters’ bare bosom- this OVA is explicit in its fanservice but still ‘normal’ by “Queen’s Blade” standards as no more explicit than the average episode of the series.

Nonetheless, as the OVA seems to bridge towards the story of the “Queen’s Blade: Rebellion” books, it’s a shame the series keep sticking to this excessive fanservice as the plot and character development by now are more than enough to carry the series along with the action, without having to resort to fanservice to keep its audience interested.

While have never been a fan of Elina, her background was nicely fleshed out and they managed to make the audience more accepting of her antics. She’ll probably not be able to escape the role of the childish, mentally unstable brat, for while they convincingly showcased her scarring past, Elina didn’t really grow from the ordeal and Echidna trying to open her eyes.

Did like seeing Echidna play a significant role in this episode, she’s one of the more complex and intriguing characters whose motivations are more three dimensional than the plain black or white characteristics the others go by.

Though being queen in Gainos, do wonder why Clodette didn’t send the vast armies at her disposal to rescue Elina herself after revolting lords had attacked her father’s castle and held Elina hostage. Sounds like weak plot writing, making the revolt all an excuse to have Reina rescue Elina.

Am actually more looking forward to the next “Queen’s Blade ~Utsukushiki Toushi-tachi” OVA for it will feature one of my favorite “Queen’s Blade” characters, the irresistible and lethal elf Allean. Together with half-elf Nowa she will face Nix, it will no doubt be a fierce battle!

Episode was quite impressive. I was pleased to hear the quality of the show was still high; especially concerning the music, which continues to impress.

I am too very much looking forward to the next episode.

I didn’t know Queen’s Blade was getting a continuation… time to go find the episode.

Was able to understand most of the raw although sometimes Echidna’s monologues were harder to follow.
For an OVA it wasn’t particularly more qualitative than the series itself, it more or less felt the same as any episode from the previous two seasons.
From what I understand, these OVA episode more or less bridge the gap between the first seasons and the story of “Queen’s Blade: Rebellion” books. “Queen’s Blade: Rebellion” apparently has more intriguing plot and characters.
