Shinryaku! Ika Musume

October 21, 2010

Although I hadn’t planned to watch out this series when browsing the anime fall season 2010 line-up, did watch the first few episodes of “Shinryaku! Ika Musume” (侵略!イカ娘) last weekend and was pleasantly surprised by what a fun comedy it is.

Based on the ongoing manga series by Anbe Masahiro, “Shinryaku! Ika Musume” is a hilarious comedy revolving around a squid girl who plans to conquer humanity in retaliation for their pollution of the seas.

Alas Squid Girl’s bold plan already hits a snag at the beach house restaurant she first encounters when setting foot ashore for she gets stuck there working as a waitress, helping out the Aizawa sisters.

Not wise in the ways of the human world, Squid Girl’s bubbly personality and silly antics give rise to plenty of comedic scenes, she plays off well against the assertive Eiko and seemingly kind but actually lethal Chizuru.

The episodes consist of several smaller chapters which gives them plenty of variety and allows supporting cast members like Takeru, Goro and Sanae to each be introduced in their own concise short story.

What appealed to me most though as I watched this show was the fun, straightforward comedy. It’s nothing alternative or different like in the excellent “Soredemo Machi Wa Mawatteiru” but rather a normal comedy that makes it an excellent weekly rendezvous for some great laughs.

Animation by studio Diomedea who also worked on series like “Sola” and “Nogizaka Haruka No Himitsu” isn’t particularly exceptional but fits the series’ genre well and doesn’t come off as too simple or raw.

Tanaka Rie voices Chizuru, she is renowned for many roles, including Minna in “Strike Witches”, Lacus in “Gundam Seed” and Maria in “Hayate No Gotoku!”. Itou Kanae who voiced Saten in “To Aru Kagaku No Railgun” and Airi in “Queen’s Blade”, voices Sanae in this series.

You may recognize Aikawa Juri as Squid Girl, she voiced Kanata in “So-Ra-No-Wo-To“ so it’s a delight to see her voice another lively character for she really carries such a performance well.

If you’re looking for a straightforward comedy with plenty of laughs, then this series is definitely worth checking out!

This is one of my favorites this season. It’s fun for the family, a good clean show with a good sense of humor. I find it refreshing amidst the myriad of ecchi shows out there.

It’s a lovely comedy so far, just watched the third episode and it was quite hilarious. With the many harem/romance series this season, it’s nice to have a straightforward comedy in there as well.

I hadn’t planned on watching this during season previews either, but then I remembered having read some of the manga. It’s really funny so I’ve started watching this.

I need some straightforward comedy and some laughs.
