Koe de Oshigoto!

December 1, 2010

The first episode of the four part OVA based on the ‘こえでおしごと!’ manga by Konno Azure was released a while ago. Having been curious about this series when the anime adaptation was originally announced, I watched it with great interest.

Revolving around high school student Kanna who gets pulled into becoming a voice actress for the eroge company her sister Yayoi works for, the series is a mix of ecchi comedy and an interesting look into the eroge industry.

What struck me most when watching this first episode was how explicit and daring it actually is. “Koe de Oshigoto!” is surprisingly bold, raunchy even about the eroge part yet all without focusing on the typical explicit scenes and nudity such anime is usually associated with.

While the eroge game scenes the characters voice are sometimes portrayed -all safely censored- it does not feel similar to the typical explicit scenes featured in hentai shows or series like “Yosuga no Sora.”.

Here in “Koe de Oshigoto!” they serve to illustrate Kanna’s embarrassment, or her and Fumika’s voice acting, which is the true ecchi fanservice this series contains.

Yet with its focus on the voice acting aspect of the eroge industry and the comedy antics that ensue after launching young Kanna into being a seiyuu, the ecchi moments are often more hilarious, rather than being blatant or cheap fanservice.

If the anime follows the original manga, we will see more voice acting scenes with plenty of chatter on sexual items, wonder if it’ll largely be comedic like in “Seitokai Yakuindomo” or if it might become more serious in nature?

Personally found the first episode hilarious. Not one to mind fanservice, I do however regret when series focus too much on cheap explicit scenes without much artistic value solely aimed at catering to a specific audience and as such ultimately detract from the better elements such series can offer.

Quite liked the animation by Studio Gokumi which while unremarkable, due to a typical character animation style is crisp, sharp and often features thick, well defined line work.

This series looks more like it will offer a good laugh with ecchi comedy stemming from the eroge background, yet with the novel twist that background is actually quite literal here, for it focuses on voice actresses in the eroge industry.

I watched the first episode of this two days ago… It got quite embarrassing for me so I’ve dropped it. I think it is focusing a little too much on the explicit fan service for me to really enjoy it.

I find nothing wrong with the fanservice. The story would be the same with or without it, and that means it’s hilarious anyway. The manga has lots of fanservice too

Can fathom that, though it’s not as much that what is typically the fanservice is explicit or striking here, Kanna and Fumika’s voice acting and their antics are the true fanservice. Not as much the eroge scenes in their mind’s eye.
Hope the future episodes keep a good balance between the hilarious comedy and introspective look into the eroge industry.
