Anime spring season 2011

March 6, 2011

Compared to the ongoing anime winter season of which little series piqued my interest beforehand, this upcoming spring season announced several shows I’m quite keen on watching.

Am most looking forward to “Maria†Holic: Alive”, the previously announced sequel to the adaptation of Minari Endou’s hilarious manga “まりあ†ほりっ“. Adored the first season of oddball comedy “Maria†Holic” centered around perverted self proclaimed lesbian Kanako and the idolized, beautiful yet sadistic cross-dresser Mariya.

A nice plus is that both Sanada Asami and Kobayashi Yuu are reprising their roles as Kanako and Mariya and Shaft is once again at the helm. Have great expectations for this sequel!

Another show I’m curious about and will watch is “Moshidora”, an anime based on the light novel “もし高校野球の女子マネージャーがドラッカーの『マネジメント』を読んだ ” by Natsumi Iwasaki which focuses on high school girl Minami who manages her school’s baseball team based on the book “Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices” by Peter Drucker.

While am not especially a fan of baseball or other sports oriented series, this series sounds rather intriguing and promotional videos showed cute animation. Minami is actually voiced by Hikasa Youko, famous from having voiced Mio in “K-ON!”.

Initially thought that yuri and transgender action comedy “Kämpfer” would receive a full sequel season, but “Kämpfer für die Liebe” seems to be a mere two episode special.

Although the ending of the anime adaption of light novel series “けんぷファー “ by Toshihiko Tsukiji was rather hideous, destroying much of what was else a fair series, will watch the special, hoping it will go back to the style of the better episodes of this show.

Being a fan of Masamune Shirow’s work will of course watch “Appleseed XIII”, a new retelling of Shirow’s famous manga that already spawned an OVA in the ’80’s as well as two CGI movies in 2004 and 2007.

Considering it’s created by Production IG, the studio who also handled the “Ghost In The Shell” installments, have high hopes they will create a great techno military action series that will leave a lasting mark much like the GITS series did.

Plan to check out “Hana-Saku Iroha” if not only for the fact that Kishida Mel did the character designs, he is the artist who also did the character designs for “So-Ra-No-Wo-To”. Other series that look interesting to sample and perhaps pick up are “Denpaonna ro Seishunotoko”, “Hidan No Aria” and “A Channel”.

Will also be watching several OVA’s, like the continuing “Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail”, “Gundam Unicorn”,”Koe de Oshigoto!” and let’s not forget the “Amagami SS” and “Highschool Of The Dead” special episodes.

So, what will you watch next season?

Seems like there are so many series in the spring. A bit overwhelming to preview them all, and I’m so lost as to what I’ll pick up. Hana-Saku Iroha looks nice though.

With Kishida Mel having done the character design for “Hana-Saku Iroha” and it being an original anime, I have high hopes for it.
