Maria†Holic: Alive 1

April 11, 2011

It has been only two months since she arrived at ‘Ame No Kiseki’ all girls high, but elegant Kanako has integrated well in this haven of pure, delicate maidens leading a gallant school life. Which turns out to be a dream as Mariya wakes the delusional lesbian up.

Determined to find her fated partner, Kanako tries the classic ‘rushing to school with jam covered toast in her mouth’ tactic hoping to run into the one. Alas her plan is soon ruined, for she gets scolded by the dorm leader and gets lost on her way to class.

Having walked past the unused first dorm building, Kanako mentions to her classmates she would love to see the legendary magnolia tree that grows in its garden. School legend has it that couples who confess their love under that tree are destined to live happily together, and Kanako’s parents confessed to each other under that tree.

Deciding to go cherry blossom viewing there the next day, Kanako is enthusiastic, even when Mariya and Matsurika tells her how that dorm became unused due to all the booby traps installed to ward off peeping toms from the nearby boys school.

Braving the traps with her three classmates Sachi, Yuzuru & Kiri as well as Ryuken and Matsurika in their party, Kanako discovers they are but silly games and trials set up by none other than the cat eared dorm leader. When Kanako and her friends arrive at the magnolia tree, Mariya awaits them with a lush picnic.

Wondering how Mariya got there, Kanako is shocked to learn she simply could have taken the emergency exit gate to side that leads right into the garden. Mariya suggests that by overcoming the trials Kanako glimpsed the determination her parents had to meet each other under that tree.

Really adored the first season of the “Maria†Holic” anime adapted by Shaft from Minari Endo’s original manga, a hilarious comedy that parodies the yuri and harem genre. The main plot of raging lesbian Kanako attending an all girls school hoping to find the girl of her dreams but discovering the beauty she fawned upon is in fact a sadistic cross dressing boy is epic.

With this second season “まりあ†ほりっく あらい”, the show picks up where it left off with its oddball characters from Kanako’s delusional perversions, Mariya’s relentless torture of man phobic Kanako, Matsurika’s razor sharp tongue that’s never shy a comeback,… they’re all back as if they had never been gone.

Luckily Shaft is once again at the helm with their typical animation style that’s perfect for a more alternative title like this.

Am very glad that thus far the entire voice cast is reprising their roles, especially Kobayashi Yu is stellar as Mariya, able to change from a bittersweet honey voice into a deeper timbre full of spite. She also starred as Shizuku in “Candy☆ Boy” or Setsuna in “Negima!”.
Sanada Asami voices Kanako, you may remember her from roles as Sawako in “K-ON!” or Vita in “Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha”.

Kanda Akami reprises her role as bespectacled Kiri, while the cat eared dorm leader is again voiced by Sawashiro Miyuki who also did Perrine in “Strike Witches”. Yuzuru is voiced by Goto Saori who also did Karen in “Sky Girls”.
Surprisingly many of these voice actresses also worked together on “Mahou Sensei Negima!” or “Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei”.

Other great news is that Sentai Filmworks, who already brought us the first season “Maria†Holic” in an affordable DVD set have already licensed this sequel, though release dates are not available yet.
The first volume of the Japanese DVD/BluRay for “Maria†Holic: Alive” slated for a July release promises to contain some unaired footage for this episode.

Can’t wait for the second episode!

Shaft does love reusing those Seiyuu in multiple shows…

Not that thats a bad thing.

Ah anyway like the first season my interest in this show tanks every time Kanako’s nosebleeding self is center stage and Mariya is nowhere to be seen, which sadly was most of this first episode. T_T

    I say only:
Moar screen time of Matsurika! xD

I’m really looking for this series.
The first one was really nice and I have the complete DVD set of the first season.

Maybe we will get the second season from Sentai as BDs. Would be cool.

Really? I quite like Kanako’s antics and the fact she’s a great parody of the generic male harem lead seen in most such love harem comedies as well as being a jab at the classic yuri female lead.
    @GREW
Got to love Matsurika. Actually one would wonder how with Mariya being quite the sadist, someone with a razorsharp comeback like Matsurika doesn’t make it seem like the series too many characters that lean towards such hostility. But since she doesn’t spare Mariya either and is simply a hoot, she’s a great character.
