Kantoku Spring Collection Tachiyomi Senyou Vol 31

May 25, 2011

For Comic1☆5, artist Kantoku from 5年目の放課後 published the ‘Spring Collection 立ち読み専用volume 31′ book, after his previous release of the ‘My Heroines’ doujin at C79.

Where the ‘My Heroines’ book contained mostly illustrations of various characters from “The World God Only Knows”, a series of which a second anime season is currently airing, this new doujin covers many different shows.

There are characters from “Puella Magi Madoka Magica”, “Gosick”, “Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Boku-tachi ha Mada Shiranai“, “Fractale”, “Shinryaku! Ika Musume”, “Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt”… and more!

Personally consider it a definite plus that Kantoku drew characters from many different franchises as it is quite a treat to see them in this artist’s specific style, and his style suits them all surprisingly well.

A downside perhaps is that this book of slightly over a dozen pages features little to no colored illustrations, most pages offer only black and white sketch art.

Though wouldn’t fault the book for that, especially considering how gorgeous Kantoku’s black and white line art and sketch work is, as seen in the above image of Victorique from “Gosick” which is breathtaking.

The series of which Kantoku selected characters to adorn the colored cover all receive a two page spread of black and white art, allowing us to focus attention on the great line work and impressive work the artist put into conveying motion and emotion using the characters poses and facial expressions.

Other series like “Shinryaku! Ika Musume”, “Nichijou” or “Star Driver” receive a single page and the doujin concludes with several pages of original work and illustrations for “変態王子と笑わない猫”.

If you are interested in acquiring this book, you can find it at Toranoana.

I really liked the illustrations – very neat to see characters from different shows in poses just as what you would expect from the various anime. Personally I find the coloring in Kantoku’s works are slightly lacking. In several cases details and the feeling get lost in the coloring.. a shame as coloring done right can make a picture shine.

Ooh this book looks really good. The cover illustrations are very pretty. Victorique is the best. ^ ^
