Gundam AGE
The “Mobile Suit Gundam AGE” anime series is the newest incarnation of the venerable Gundam franchise, following the recent “Gundam 00 -A wakening of the Trailblazer-” movie and the ongoing “Gundam Unicorn” OVA series.
Initial impression after watching this first episode of “Gundam AGE” is that this series seems to be aimed at a younger audience, no doubt they hope to introduce youths to the Gundam franchise with a simpler style that also reminisces back to the original series.
The animation by studio Sunrise is good, but the simpler styling used for the various characters also shows through in the mecha designs and action scenes, the Gundam and other mobile suits aren’t as elaborate or well rendered as those in “Gundam 00” for instance.
Liked the “Gundam 00” series and am impressed with the “Gundam Unicorn” OVA, but this new “Gundam AGE” series is not a show I will keep on watching. Perhaps die-hard Gundam fans will watch regardless, alas personally am not convinced by it so am dropping it.
I watched the first episode over the weekend and got into a discussion with fellow twitters on our initial reaction. No doubt that Gundam Age is aimed at younger audience and there is nothing wrong with that, I think the younger kids could use a show like this. I can write paragraphs worth of material discussing how Age is like a Super Robot show compared to Real Robot but I digress.

While it is nice to see such an attempt to introduce kids to the Gundam franchise through a series as this, it does mean that to me personally its style and mood don’t appeal to me.
Before I even read your comment about this being aimed at younger audiences, the first thought that came to my mind after looking at the screenshots from it, was “wow, those gundams look like they’re made out of marshmallows!”
@Michael Flux
Don’t think they’re edible though. XD The visual style and design of the characters and mecha is indeed a mix between the classic look and a more kid oriented one.
