Queen’s Blade Premium Visual Book OVA

November 12, 2011

Although Reina won the previous queen’s blade tournament, it is her sister Claudette who took the throne, bringing a new era of freedom and prosperity to the vast empire. At least for its direct inhabitants, in contrast the smaller factions on the outskirts found themselves brutally persecuted under Claudette’s tyranny.

Seeing her men slaughtered and the Kreutz family castle burning, Annelotte narrowly escapes but is mercilessly pursued by assassins who follow her into the nearby forest lands. When the assassins prepare to burn down the forest, they incur the wrath of Allean, the elf who protects these forests and swiftly defeats the assassins.

Although she doesn’t want to meddle in affairs of the world outside, Allean rescues Annelotte who was collapses, severely ill due to the wound she sustained by a poisoned dagger.

While she’s grateful for Allean’s care, Annelotte seeks to leave soon as she wishes to eliminate the current queen Claudette whose reign of tyranny wiped out the entire Kreutz country. Her injury recovering slowly, Annelotte’s pride seeks a duel with Allean when the elf warrior observes that with her current skills, she’ll never beat the queen.

Defeated after a single strike, Annelotte pleads with Allean to train her as she wishes to become stronger in order to defeat the queen. Initially reluctant to accept another disciple after having parted ways with Nowa, Allean does concede and rigorously trains Annelotte who is quick to learn.

Increasing her strength and martial skills, Annelotte feels invigorated by her time spent with the warrior elf, where she learns to be true to herself. As for Allean, her heart opens again after a long solitary isolation in the forest where she found herself trapped due to a curse placed on her by the swamp witch.

During one of their sparring sessions a lighting strike from a sudden thunderstorm cleaves a gigantic tree, sending the huge trunk crashing down on them, luckily Annelotte awakens her true self, summoning her steed Ambrosius and with her lance she destroys the falling tree trunk.

Ready to face her future, Annelotte parts ways with Allean and sets off on her quest to defeat Claudette.

Thoughts on this OVA~

Following the previous “Queen’s Blade Utsukushiki Toushi-tachi” OVA series, this new OVA episode came bundled with the first “Queen’s Blade Premium Visual Book” that was released in October. Another OVA, to be bundled with the “Queen’s Blade Rebellion Premium Visual Book” is scheduled for next January.

Must confess that I lost interest in the franchise during the “Queen’s Blade Utsukushiki Toushi-tachi” OVA series which increasingly became nothing but pure fanservice that approached near softcore in its abundant, superfluous nudity. While I do not mind the occasional fanservice, have always regretted “Queen’s Blade” increasingly resorted to such gratuitous nudity instead of focusing on its core story of medieval fantasy.

While as a fan of Allean could rejoice getting the extra twenty minute special sequence all about the lovely elf on top of this OVA episode, the fact that it’s an even more fanservice oriented imitation of “Training with Hinako” that concludes with Allean doing push ups while topless made it rather appalling.

Recently completed watching “Game Of Thrones”, a very well executed live action series adaptation of the first novel from the “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy series, greatly enjoyed it.

While that series too did contain some superfluous nudity and explicit scenes, personally do believe that with its intricate array of characters and factions, “Queen’s Blade” as an anime could have been a successful medieval fantasy series like “Game of Thrones”, approaching a similar level with its action, plotting and medieval combat scenery peppered with a lot of fantasy elements.

Alas fear that even the “Queen’s Blade Rebellion” anime series that is set to follow after the next OVA, the series will keep most of its focus on the fanservice. A shame as it could be so much more.

I only recently caught up with the Queen’s Blade Utsukushiki Toushi-tachi OVA series… while I generally agree it’s got more the focus on fanservice for the most part, but I have a hard time ignoring anything with ghostly maid Airi chan in it! Airi chan is ❤

    @Wolfheinrich
Can relate to that, I watched this OVA since I knew Allean was a main character in it. But I oft wish the series would have been more than just the increasingly heavy and explicit fanservice fest it is.

So that’s the curse the swamp witch placed on Allean… Interesting 😀 Well for me I tend to filter out the nudity parts by now. 😀 Although despite Rebellion going to be fan-service heavy I look foward to the swamp witch finally making a physical appearance.

From what I understood, the swamp witch not only placed a curse on Allean preventing her from leaving the forest but the swamp witch’s minions also decimated the elf village, causing Allean to remain solitary (with her grief).
But with the plot becoming this rich in factions, characters with different motivations, the series could be so much more if it focused on that without being a fanservice fest.

Now I feel sorry for Allean 😦 . Although that does mean that if she can some how muster that level of power now when compared to the first 2 seasons, she’s definitely someone to look out for @_@!
