Girls und Panzer

October 13, 2012

One of several series was looking forward to this fall season is “Girls und Panzer”, a show that thanks to its military theme and alternate earth setting does not seem entirely unlike “Strike Witches”.

Enjoyed the first episode quite a bit, and while it does hint that some plot elements may be more serious in tone, the overall atmosphere and mood of the show definitely seems to be light slice-of-life genre of girls making friends and enjoying school club activities.

Except of course for the fact that in the “Girls und Panzer” world, the most popular school club activity for girls is the martial art of tank battles or 戦車道 ! “K-ON!” with tanks instead of instruments may come to mind, but I do not believe this series will be like that either, closest comparison can perhaps be made with “Upotte!”.

Leisurely days of cute girls making friends and having adventures in their tank warfare school club without anything overly serious or dramatic, seems the perfect recipe for a weekly rendezvous of relaxing fun.

Main lead character Miho is voiced by Fuchigami Mai who voiced Maekawa in “Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko” and Kaname in “Ookamikakushi”. Enthusiastic Saori is voiced by Kayano Ai, she’s tackled roles like Mayaka in “Hyouka”, Inori in “Guilty Crown”, Muginami in “Rinne no Lagrange” and also voices Mashiro in this season’s “Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo”. Ozaki Mami who voices Hana does not seem to have any other roles credited to her.

Iguchi Yuka voices Mako, she voiced Index in “To aru Majutsu no Index”, Tsukihi in “Nisemonogatari”, Norie in “Tamayura ~hitotose~” and Subaru in “Mayo Chiki!”. Yukari is voiced by Nakagami Ikumi, who has only done a few small roles before.

Next to that main crew of five girls, there’s a plethora of other girls, including the various members of the four other tank crews of Ourai Girls School.

Am looking forward to more screen time for monocle-clad Momo who is voiced by Ueda Kana, she’s tackled roles such as Rin in “fate/stay night”, Yumi in “Maria-sama ga miteru” and Saki in “Saki”.
Kitamura Eri is slated to voice Darjeeling, she also voiced Karen in “Bakemonogatari”, Yachiyo in “Working!!” and Allean in “Queen’s Blade”.

So far this series seems right up my alley and will be a fixed weekly watch for me to enjoy a moment of simple, light-hearted and fun anime.

The show seems fun, though a little suspension in disbelief is required when I think of these girls trying to do maintenance on those tanks. They pulled off miracles by restoring that submerged stug III overnight!

Very true! That was an eyebrow-raising moment. Not only restoring a submerged tank overnight (rusted through, engine ceased), but the others were in poor shape too and they were able to simply brush off the corrosion with a bit of cleaner.

I guess the cleaning power of splashing each other with water shouldn’t be estimated.
