Oniichan dakedo Ai sae Areba Kankeinai yo ne!

October 15, 2012

Also known as “Oniai”, this anime is adapted from the light novel series “お兄ちゃんだけど愛さえあれば関係ないよねっ“ written by Suzuki Daisuke. Not unlike that other brocon comedy “Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne!!“, “Oniai” revolves around a male lead who is caught in the center of a harem of which one of the contenders is his own younger sister Akiko, who suffers from a serious brother-complex.

Didn’t particularly like “Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne!!“, especially its adaptation from manga to anime form did not carry over well for me, hence had not put “Oniai” on my to watch list for this fall season, but sampled the first two episodes anyway.

To my surprise, actually quite enjoyed this show so far, while obviously a run of the mill harem comedy with default character types and a more risky subject, it managed to hit the right comedic notes, even if it offers nothing new or inspired.

Although you wouldn’t expect any ground breaking content from a show like this anyway, but rather a plain fun harem comedy, which “Oniai” will successfully deliver if the first two episodes are a trendsetter for the remaining run of this show.

Animation by studio Silver Link is good, with lots of attention having gone into rendering the various cute girls as well as possible, leading to nicely animated close up shots. The character visual design style is reminiscent of “Mayo Chiki!”, another series which studio Silver Link and character designer Kawamura Kousuke worked on.

Lively Akiko is voiced by newcomer Kido Ibuki, who has done an excellent job so far and is accompanied by several veteran voice actresses such as Chihara Minori, who voices blonde Anastasia. Chihara Minori previously voiced Nagato in “Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu”, Chiaki in “Minami-ke” and Horizon in “Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon”.

Haruomi is voiced by Shimoda Asami, she’s tackled roles like Ami and Mami in “The iDOLM@STER”, Lin in “IS: Infinite Stratos” and Kotomi in “Seitokai Yakuindomo”.

Feisty redhead Arashi is voiced by Kitamura Eri, who’s no stranger to brocon comedies as she voiced Nao in “Oniichan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne!!“ as well as Karen in “Bakemonogatari”, she also did Yachiyo in “Working!!”, Allean in “Queen’s Blade” and Miu in “Papa no Iukoto wo Kikinasai!“

While hadn’t planned on watching this series and it will no doubt be a typical harem show of which there are plenty, quite enjoyed it so far so will keep on watching this romantic comedy.
