Hentai Ouji To Warawanai Neko

April 17, 2013

Next to “To Aru Kagaku No Railgun S” and “Shingeki no Kyojin“, the other series was looking forward to the most at the start of this new anime season is “Hentai Ouji To Warawanai Neko”.

Originally a light novel series written by Sagara Sou, discovered “変態王子と笑わない猫“ through the many illustrations created for it by Kantoku, who is easily one of my favorite Japanese artists. Was quickly intrigued when seeing the gorgeous images Kantoku made of its characters Tsukiko, Azusa and Tsukushi.

When the light novels spawned a manga drawn by Okomeken, was glad that they faithfully stuck to Kantoku’s signature art style so picked up the first two volumes and hope to soon acquire volumes three and four.

Upon hearing this franchise -also known as “The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat” or ‘Henneko’- would get an anime adaptation, was overjoyed and after an excellent first episode am confident it will be a terrific show.

Although it is a fairly standard harem school comedy story, have enjoyed the story in the manga thanks to the quirky characters and excellent comedy.
Especially the chemistry between Yokodera and Tsukiko is excellent, with his perverted but kind hearted ways offset against her not being able to express any emotions, they encounter lots of humorous situations.

The story may have a few less convincing chapters and arcs throughout, but have no doubts that the anime will adapt those chapters well and end up being a fun and entertaining watch overall.

Animation by studio JC Staff was excellent, very glad to see that like the manga, they too remained faithful to the original character design style used by Kantoku. They recreated some of the light novel’s iconic artworks quite well into anime form.

Rather impressed so far with Ogura Yui’s voice work as Tsukiko, the deadpan way in which she delivers Tsukiko’s lines of dialogue really reinforces the perception that Tsukiko is unable to express her emotions.
Ogura Yui previously voiced characters like Alice in “Kami-sama no Memo-chou”, Kokona in “Yama no Susume” and Hanbei in “Oda Nobuna no Yabou”.

Ojousama Azusa is voiced by Ishihara Karoi, she previously voiced Madoka in “Rinne no Lagrange”, Konoe in “Kona Naki ni Hitori, Imouto ga iru!” and Kanna in “Ano Natsu de Matteru”.

Tamura Yukari voices Tsukiko’s older sister Tsukushi, she tackled roles like Rena in “Higurashi no Naku Koro ni”, Nanoha in “Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha”, Suzuha in “Steins;Gate” and Masuzu in last season’s “Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru”.

Being a fan of this franchise and what I have read of the story so far, had and still do have high expectations of the anime, hence I hope that it will continue to provide excellent weekly entertainment and stay true to the spirit of the manga and light novels.

If you like harem school comedy shows, are keen on getting a few good laughs or just want ogle the irresistibly cute Tsukiko, then definitely give “Hentai Ouji To Warawanai Neko” a try.
