The previous anime season featured a few terrific slice-of-life series with “Yuyushiki” and “Aiura”. Seems that this summer season brings even more slice-of-life shows, which makes me quite happy as it is easily my personal favorite genre.
Next to series like “Tamayura ~More Aggressive~” and “Stella Jougakuin Koutouka C3-bu” there is also the anime adaptation of Hara Yui’s yonkoma manga “きんいろモザイク” and the first episodes of “Kiniro Mosaic” were nothing less than lovely.
Perhaps an easy description of the show would be a cross between “A Channel” and “Ikoku Meiro no Croisée”, considering it features the leisurely school life of a group of irresistibly cute girls, with the element of Alice & Karen being foreigners who have come to live in Japan.
Whereas a slice-of-life show like “Stella Jougakuin Koutouka C3-bu” pulls towards the action comedy side and “Tamayura ~More Aggressive~” focuses more on heartwarming moments, “Kiniro Mosaic” is all about showing cute girls enjoying their fun daily lives filled with idle chatter.
The moe factor reaches new heights considering how irresistibly cute all the girls are, even more so than the already cute cast of “A Channel”. This show just screams moe, but not in an obnoxious or bothersome way, even though they ham up the girls’ cute factor for all its worth.
Animation by studio Gokumi is excellent, with lots of attention going to rendering all the girls in a cute style with soft background scenery. While it isn’t exactly the overall level of fluid animation and detail studio Gokumi achieved in their work on “Oda Nobunaga no Yabou”, the visual style is very close to the one they used for “A Channel”.
Airheaded Shinobu is voiced by Nishi Asuka, she previously voiced Rika in “Hataraku Maou-sama!” and Ursula in “Mouretsu Pirates”. Cute Alice is voiced by Tanaka Manami who doesn’t seem to have many other roles credited to her.
Blonde Karen is voiced by Touyama Nao, she voiced Yune in “Ikoku Meiro no Croisée”, Kanon in “The World God Only Knows” and Yui in “Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru”.
Taneda Risa voices twin-tailed Aya, she previously voiced Saki in “Shinsekai Yori”, Yukari in “Yuyushiki” and Kaoru in “Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru”. Lively Youko is voiced by Uchiyama Yumi, she’s tackled roles like Momiji in “Binbougami ga!”, Nagi in “A Channel” and Mayumi in “Hataraku Maou-sama!”.
The girls homeroom teacher Sakura is voiced by Satou Satomi who also voiced Ritsu in “K-ON!”, Manami in “Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai”, Aria in “Seitokai Yakuindomo” and Chitanda in “Hyouka”.
If you like shows such as “A Channel”, “Acchi Kocchi” or “Lucky Star” then I definitely recommend you watch “Kiniro Mosaic”. It is a cute, lovely and heartwarming show that is the best contender to offer you the most relaxing and feel good moments of the entire week.
