Houkago no Pleiades

May 4, 2015

Had not planned on watching “Houkago no Pleiades”, but decided to anyway. Originally a four part net anime created by studio Gainax in collaboration with car manufacturer Subaru, this show has been a joy to watch.

Although there might be some serious events in it, “Houkago no Pleiades” is foremost a lighthearted, fluffy magical girl show that wants to entertain showing cute girls sporting cute outfits, flying about doing typical magical girl shenanigans.

Whereas some magical girl series have pushed the genre’s boundaries with more dramatic plots like “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” or feature life or death challenges for its characters like in “Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru”, this show doesn’t take itself too seriously but is all about the viewer having fun while watching it.

Next to its fun and adventurous -yet innocent- atmosphere, the animation delivered by studio Gainax is terrific. Everything is bright and painted with a soft color palette, from the girls’ everyday world to their magical girl outfits.

Also quite appreciate the studio’s use of visually enchanting scenery and dynamic lighting when the girls ascend to the skies on their magical brooms. Not unexpected considering this anime is sponsored by Subaru, but the magical brooms making engine sounds is a nice gimmick.

If you like the magical girl genre or feel like watching a lighthearted anime that is just full of cuteness, then definitely give this show a try! You can watch “Houkago no Pleiades” on Crunchyroll.
