Cat Shit One

July 17, 2010

The Vietnam war era military action manga “Cat Shit One” (titled “Apocalypse Meow” in the US) by Motofumi Kobayashi receives an anime adaption with “Cat Shit One The Animated Series”.

Featuring computer-generated animation by Studio Anima rather than the more classic Japanese animation style, the anime also moves the series action theater to the Middle East.

Not only unique because it uses only computer-generated imagery, but the jarring juxtaposition between seeing cute, fluffy bunnies in such raw, realistic military action where bullets fly and death is but a moment away is even more striking in animated format.

The first episode kicks off with tons of military combat action! Intent on rescuing some hostages, mercenaries Packy and Botasky fight a desperate battle against hordes of enemy soldiers.

Do not believe that “Cat Shit One The Animated Series” will be for all audiences or the common anime viewer as all of the cuteness of seeing characters morphed into bunnies or other animals aside, the series’ military action is rather realistic and explicit.

Although blood itself is barely seen and explicit gore is avoided so far, the many deaths and extreme violence approach that of live action series like “Band Of Brothers” or “The Pacific”.

Enjoyed the first episode a lot and hope the series continues on this course, showing the harsh reality of combat.

Those who like series such as “Strike Witches” for the characters’ chronic lack of pants might also enjoy “Cat Shit One” as both the bunnies and camels sport outfits without pants. Though this is rather in line with the classic cartoon works and characters of Looney Tunes or Disney.

So for the brave ones among you, you can now dive straight from the latest gritty first person shooters right into the action again with “Cat Shit One”! Plus the cute, fluffy bunnies, of course.

    @Raiga
    Well, have to sneak in some humor and puns, don’t I?
    Really like “Cat Shit One” for that aspect, this jarring, unsettling contrast of cute animals in a raw, dark setting of such a military conflict. It’s showing cute characters in some of the harshest possible storytelling themes.

    Yeah, I liked the first episode and had to laugh since I first saw the trailer online.

    It’s very cool made and somehow realstic when it comes to battle (as far I can tell).

    Can’t wait to see the next episodes :3

    This animation is so admirable. Yes, considering that it has cute white bunnies as the characters. The adaptation is a well-made 3D animation. it deserves an A+ approval!
