Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu

November 12, 2014

Had originally not planned on watching “Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu”, the anime based on the “俺、ツインテールになります。” light novel series written by Mizusawa Yume, considering the synopsis suggested it could be a rather ridiculous show.

Yet, curiosity got the better of me so I decided to watch a few episodes of “OreTwi” and was instantly hooked on this absolutely hilarious action comedy that is both an homage and a parody of typical sentai hero action genre shows.

To be clear, “Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu” is indeed a completely ridiculous anime, from its core plot to the characters, battles and events, it is all hilariously silly making “OreTwi” a surprisingly decent comedy that doesn’t shy from breaking the fourth wall, nor does it take itself too seriously.

An easy comparison would be “Haiyore! Nyaruko-san” which also features a ridiculous premise, outrageous characters and plenty of references to other anime. While I did enjoy “Haiyore! Nyaruko-san”, personally do prefer “Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu” for its better execution as a parody of the typical sentai or action hero show.

Although “Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu” excels in being a parody and taking plenty of jabs at various genres, this is surprisingly also its weakness because ultimately it remains a standard anime which doesn’t dare foray into more alternative animation styles or storytelling like “Space Dandy” or “KILL la KILL”.

A shame because as a no holds barred parody, “OreTwi” could have aimed higher and broken some boundaries if it had been more inventive.
If I were to fault the show though it would not be for the above mentioned flaw but rather for the inconsistent animation by studio Production IMS, most episodes alas contain several scenes with visibly poor animation.

Nonetheless, do recommend this anime to those of you looking for a fun comedy that parodies typical sentai action and magical girl genre shows.

You can watch “Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu” on Crunchyroll.
