Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru

October 26, 2010

Wasn’t sure at first if I’d sample “Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru” but am glad I did as I’ve been enjoying this hilarious nonsensical slapstick comedy.

Based on the “Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru” (それでも町は廻っている) manga by Ishiguro Masakazu, this series shows us the antics of the maids and patrons of a small café in a typical Japanese shopping district.

However, the owner and her two maids, part time working high school students Hotori and Toshiko are anything but normal, their friends and the café’s patrons too are an amalgam of oddball characters.

Taking that premise and having animation studio Shaft at the helm, this comedy series is a rapid-fire of absurd situations, crazy characters pulling incredibly silly stunts all with Shaft’s great visual touch.

Adore the opening song ‘Down town’ by Sakamoto Maaya and Round Table, it has that typical Round Table vibe and the flashy visuals and upbeat song are perfect for a crazy show like “Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru”. The closing track is quite hilarious as well.

Yuuki Aoi voices Toshiko, she also voiced Noel in “So-Ra-NoWo-To” and Juubei in “Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls”. Do lament though that Shiraishi Ryoko is only voicing secondary character Harue, a horribly styled character to boot. Always love Shiraishi Ryoko’s voice work and wish she’d get more prominent female character roles.

Couldn’t help but notice Sugita Tomokazu voicing the girls’ maths teacher Moriaki, a role reminiscent of his voice work as the priest Touichirou Kanae in “Maria†Holic“.

An excellent oddball comedy, though not the same comedy genre as say “Shinryaku! Ika Musume”.

That voice! If it wasn’t for Hotori’s voice, this show wouldn’t be as charming. She has the same voice actor as the one who did Mutsumi from Seitokai no Yakuin Domo and P-ko from Arakawa.
Also, love the opening and ending scenes.

There seems to be a maid anime almost every season. Anyways, I checked out the OP and I like it too!

I can’t say that I like this show a lot or that I laughed a lot in the first two episodes, but at least I think it is interesting so far 😉

She does a great job, adored the grating edge on her voice during the detective/mystery scenes in that episode when she brags.

Well we all do love maids! XD
The OP by Round Table struck me, didn’t expect them to do a track for a show like this and it’s quite fitting in the sense that it’s not fitting for the type of comedy show.

That it sure is, but definitely made me laugh. Nonetheless, it’s indeed a different comedy type compared to say “Shinryaku! Ika Musume” or such.
