Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen

October 16, 2015

The first “うたわれるもの” adult visual novel already spawned its own anime adaptation nearly ten years ago. Sequel to that first game, “うたわれるもの 偽りの仮面” was released in Japan last month and already spawned its own anime with “Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen”.

Watched the original “Utawarerumono” anime back when it aired in 2006, it had impressive world building and background setting, lots of characters and plenty of action, political machinations and mystery. However, personally wasn’t too thrilled about some of the plot developments surrounding main character Hakuoro in the final episodes.

Was looking forward to “Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen”, although my interest in this sequel isn’t merely for the promise of plenty of character development and an immersive viewing experience in a complex fantasy style realm with lots of action, political scheming and grand battles.

While all of that sounds very promising, must admit that I’m keen on watching this anime even more for its cast filled with cute kemonomimi girls like Kuon. Although lots of other characters have yet to appear, from the first episode on it is Kuon who really steals the show. She’s not just a cute girl sporting animal ears and matching tail, but a strong, dependable female lead that compliments the main male lead character Haku rather well.

Enjoyed the first two episodes of this new autumn anime so I will definitely watch the rest. Do hope this show will run for two seasons at least, enabling the studio to sufficiently build up the characters and story.
You can watch this anime titled as “Utawarerumono: The False Faces” on Crunchyroll.
