Candy☆Boy EX02 (episode 8)
It is a cold winter day, even though outside everything is covered by a blanket of white snow and thick snowflakes continue to fall from the skies, Kanade finds herself in a tropical indoor pool, clad in a cute swimsuit and victim of a sharp photo lens.
At the other end of the camera that continuously snaps pictures is her fervent admirer Sakuya, who turned the pool into a professional photo studio complete with lighting umbrellas and an assistant to hold up the light reflector board.
That willing assistant is of course Yukino, who gleefully allies with Sakuya in the photo frenzy.
When Kanade starts to question why they’re at a pool in the middle of winter and why she is the token model for the day, Sakuya happily confesses the photos she is taking will be used to create a dakimakura with Kanade’s bikini clad likeness on it.
Excited at the prospect of such a Kanade hugging pillow, Yukino approves and joins Sakuya in browsing through the best photos they made.
Soon their digital camera displays a memory card error as an irritated Kanade makes swift work to snatch the data card while scolding the girls for their silly antics.
Hearing all the ruckus, Shizuka walks up to the trio, wondering what they are up to. Noticing Shizuka is wearing a school swimsuit with Kanade’s name in it, Sakuya dares not imagine it could originally be Kanade’s swimsuit and is soon thunderstruck when she hears it indeed is so.
Visiting her two beloved sisters while on school leave for a ski trip, Shizuka had borrowed Kanade’s middle school swimsuit for their pool adventure, for she hadn’t brought any swimsuit of her own.
Snapping a quick picture of Shizuka, Sakuya breaks out her laptop and displays some nice Photoshop prowess by extracting Kanade’s head from one of her middle school photographs and paste it on the body of Shizuka wearing Kanade’s swimsuit.
Though the obsessive girl’s skills impress Yukino, Kanade is much less thrilled and quickly proceeds to tie up her feisty admirer.
With Sakuya tied up and Shizuka drifting leisurely on an air mattress in the pool, Yukino and Kanade spend some time together.
Saying how happy she is they got this unique chance to visit such a nice pool, Yukino reveals she is most thrilled of being able to admire her beloved sister in a two piece swimsuit.
Remembering they weren’t able to go to pool or beach last year, Kanade acknowledges Yukino’s feelings, but swiftly acts embarrassed when Yukino exclaims it’s rather unfair that she’s always the one being fawned over when in her swimsuit.
Trying to feign innocence, Kanade is forced to admit she has been visiting the school pool during Yukino’s swim club practice for most of the past week. Yukino had clearly spotted her sister, not falling for half-hearted lies about trying to find some artistic spots, she forbids her sister from coming to the school pool during swim club practice.
Visibly disappointed, Kanade begs if she can’t come by from time to time to see Yukino swim. Unable to resist her sister’s pleading eyes, Yukino of course wholeheartedly consents.
Free from her restraints, Sakuya eyes the cocktail glass that Kanade had sipped from earlier, but before she has a chance to indulge herself by drinking from it, Shizuka snatches it away and swiftly empties the drink.
Hearing Kanade shout from afar that she’ll not be able to get her memory card back to recuperate the photos she made, Sakuya is devastated her scheme fell through.
Taking pity on the nutty but otherwise good natured girl, Shizuka shows Sakuya a photo she had made earlier of her with the twin sisters. Delighted, Sakuya thanks the Sakurai’s younger sister.
Finally! The winter pool swimsuit episode!
Wait, that ain’t right… anyhow, the three Sakurai sisters: Kanade, Yukino and Shizuka, all clad in swimsuits!
And rather tasteful ones to boot, though Shizuka fell prey to the token fanservice fetish character role by being adorned with the more generic school swimsuit.
Loved this extra episode, it was a nice story featuring all the girls together and containing all the typical “Candy☆Boy” elements.
Too bad it was rather short at only ten minutes long and it did have quite a bit of still scenes, but with the budget constraints they have, I rather see such well cared for still shots and sublime facial close up that support the excellent voice work instead of poorly animated scenes.
Luckily this “Candy☆Boy” enjoys the same animation style and quality as all the other ones, which is great.
Even though this episode had little to no landscape scenes and took place mostly indoors, I can never shake that slight feeling reminiscent of Makoto Shinkai’s work when seeing some of the “Candy☆Boy” scenes and images.
Originally labeled as an episode 8 when the “Candy☆Boy” second DVD volume was announced, this extra episode is titled EX02 シアクセキョユウリロン and not episode 8 like on the official site.
It really looks like a sort of omake episode, like the EX01 that showed us the tale of how Kanade and Yukino originally arrived at their school dorm.
